Ability to adapt is key for event-planning business owner

April Adams vividly remembers, as most transplants to Arizona do, her first summer in Phoenix 15 years ago. But it wasn't the blazing heat so much as the impact it had on her new meeting-planning business.

"I didn't know in Phoenix the whole city shut down from May 1 through September . . . so I starved," she said.

It wasn't the last time she had to adapt. Adams had to retool her business, Corporate Destination Services of Arizona, after 9/11, and has made major changes in the past couple years as corporations have cut back on the lavish meetings she used to organize.
